Philmont Scout Ranch

Cimarron, New Mexico

I was fortunate enough to spend the summers of 1994 and 1995 working on the photography staff at Philmont Scout Ranch, the national High Adventure base of the Boy Scouts of America. Philmont is 137,493 acres of New Mexico high country, almost all of it astoundingly beautiful. It's the largest camping operation of its kind in the world — each summer, tens of thousands of Scouts and Scouters come for ten-day backpacking treks through her backcountry or take classes at the Philmont Training Center. Living in California (endowed with the Sierras and other natural wonders), it's hard to explain to people here just why and how much Philmont gets under your skin — like everyone else who's worked there, I Want To Go Back to Philmont!

Hope that you enjoy my pages — if so, drop me a line (but if you ask me what to pack for your trek, or what The Secret is to getting a job at Philmont, don't expect much help; I don't have many handy tips for either).
